Mountain bike. Average HR 143/ max 154. Tomorrow is a run with a 13:05 100 mile runner. Should be good practice for Silver Rush.

Tony?

No. This guy is as elusive as a Sumatran rhino. Only a few people have ever captured his image on film.

But he does exist. Apparently he is grossly overweight right now. I think a whole 145 pounds.

Lucho said...

Ya, he's trying to make this season's Biggest Loser. I heard 155 pounds.

Nice ride! I think 7,405' might translate to 7:40:05.
How do you manage to keep your average HR at 143 with only a max of 154 when you descend 7,405' as well? Scared shit on the descents?

It was just over 4 hours. First, I bought my first HR monitor in 1996... so I've been using one for 15 years now and when I want to be disciplined and diligent I can be. I'm good at modulating effort ever so slightly to balance myself where I want. Today I was able to hold 151 for nearly every climb. And you figure a 3 mile climb takes maybe 30:00, but the descent takes maybe 5:00-7:00. So I am at the higher HR for a much longer period of time. I can also spin at 120 revs and hold my HR at ~130. I don't get scared on descents :) I hit over 40 a few times on the dirt today.

I see. Your HR is still elevated from the long climb and the descent is so fast that it's not dropping a whole lot before the next climb.
The 7:40 I was referring to was an alternitive to your 9:00 prediction at Leadville ;-)

Rick- I suck at math... but I think it's more about the time spent at the different HR's and not so much about how low it falls on the descent. So 30:00 at HR 151 followed by 5:00 at 110 is still going yield a higher average for the 35:00.
No predictions for Leadville!

If I were decending at 40mph on a dirt bike my HR would be 150+ without even spinning.

It's all about relaxing and going with the bike. If it's built up right it will be solid and stable. The important thing is to not panic and tense up, then shit happens. And always have a way out if something does happen like a Bigfoot walks in to the road... you gotta know where you're going.

How technical will the mtb race (trail) be?

Great stuff, TW.

Did you see my Eye of the Hawk?
6.99/8abv w/integrity!

Lucho said...

Matt- Over-all not very technical. Mostly fire roads but there are a few vicious climbs. The key to Leadville is to be able to hold a fairly high pressure like a time trial. That was my thing back in the day. I just got word from my sponsor tonight that they're building me a 22 pound meat saw for the race. The one I train on is 32 pounds :) I'm psyched!

Eye of the Hawk? I'll definitely check that out! And for 6.99 with that ABV? Wow!

No, but thanks for making me Google who that guy is... he's a stud! I love how he points to strength training as a key component. Very true. There a lot of fragile runners out there who get injured a lot. Partly from disordered eating and mostly from simply being weak. Another blog post soon to come.

Yea I think some older guys like Rae and Crenshaw have done 13h5m before in 100. I think a couple others like Godale and DJ and SJ have done 100 around there as part of a 24 hour event. I also don't know where any of those live...but I think SJ is at least in the area so I'll go with him. I think if you can go 165m in 24 hours you gotta come through 100 around there.

bring some salt caps for your run with the rhino.

bob, right? isn't he the one we saw wobbling around on hope pass who said, "I've got it under control" when we offered him help?

bring some ass caps too... :)

Wende,
That was hilarious. For the unaware, Wende Lucho's sis and his wife and I were crewing for him at Leadville. At Tree Line, I was like, "get some S caps out before he gets here." I think it was Wende who asked, "What are ass caps?!" I can only imagine what was going through her mind.

We got some good mileage out of that one...
"Tim needs ASS CAPS NOW!!!"

And then there was a post about dude. And then it was gone.

Every time I think about electrolytes Ass Caps are what I think. Totally hilarious.

Gz- Ya, sorry. It was sappy.

Lucho is who I first learned about the difference between an ass cap and an end cap. 10x the salt in your ass than your end. Somehow I never knew that. I guess that means I was a dumb-ass.
