Thursday 14 miles

We drove 5 hours back home to Kansas and I had my wife drop me off on the highway 14 miles from home. I stepped out of the truck in to 95 degree heat and smothering humidity. Tying my shoes caused me to drip sweat. I ran the back roads home. Just a few miles from the Nebraska line out in some of the most rolling terrain ever. The thing I notice most is how the cows bolt and run from me. In Colorado they don't even look up. Today we are taking the boys to the livestock show and then the carnival.
I'm shut down for Leadville. Full taper/ rest is on. 22 days out and I will employ a similar strategy that worked for me in 15 Ironmans. The last 3-4 weeks is easily the most critical of all the 10-12 weeks leading up to any race. This will be my first 'taper' for an ultra.
 More on this after Leadville.

Wise move, sir. Better to be over-rested than over-trained.

I love it, Lucho. Nebraska, neurotic livestock, taper. ..
Get it, dog.

Let me guess - you beat your wife and kids to the house.

I agree and I am about to shut parts down here pretty quick as well. I think that I learned from my river trip earlier this month that I could take nearly a full week off totally and its impact was negligible to output.

Where in KS are you from? I too hail from the Sunflower State (Topeka).

lol. The cows in Boulder just stare at me like, "Why are you on MY trail?" They grudgingly get out of the way... mainly the calves.

Well if MC says his secret trick was pushing the kid around in the jogging stroller, I suppose its a secret trick times 2 for you.

Cheers Matt.

Shaun- Nope. The run was quite slow for me. The heat index killed me.

G- Ya. I think it's the insecure people that push the 11th hour and that usually comes back to bite them in the ass. Lord knows I've raced too many times tired. Nick has it 100% correct.

Jim- I'm about 90 miles North of Hays on the Nebraska line. A little town of 400 people called Almena. You can still by a home with land here for about $10,000.

Mtrunner- When I first moved to Boulder back in 01' I was used to the cows here... they run away. I was running on a trail and encountered a cow and simply kept running assuming it would run away... the damn thing squared up on me and lowered its head. Funny.
