Vo2 max test after high altitude camp

Robert Gary, coach of Brian Olinger, Dan Huling and The Ohio State University contacted Team Indiana Elite coach Robert Chapman. His athletes were going to try altitude training for the first time and he wanted to measure the benefits. Before the guys left for their month long training stint in the Park City, Utah area they stopped in Bloomington to meet with Chapman. They took part in tests such as running economy, VO2 Max and lactate threshold. Upon returning to Columbus, they went back down to Chapman to see how their bodies responded to the altitude. We were on hand to see some of the findings. This is the day after Olinger's return from altitude.

Robert Gary is a total bad ass. He accomplishments are broader than even being the OSU coach. http://www.usatf.org/athletes/bios/oldBios/2005/Gary_Robert.asp

12% increase, that's pretty solid. But the best part about it is what he said after that...."it's just numbers", you still have to go out and perform. But not to take away from the improvements he saw. When's your next race at sea level?

GZ- This video is the first I've heard of him. I really don't follow running very much... I follow my 2 year old a lot.

BJ- I can't really see myself racing anytime in the near future. If I do they will be unplanned and done simply as workouts. I still want the FTK on Walker Ranch- that will be my first "race".

Tim,

You apparently need to spend more time on LetsRun! Gary ran in the 96 and 04 Olympic steeples.

Justin- You apparently don't know me well at all. GZ... care to comment?

Short version: high level tri guy decides he wants to focus on marathons instead of multisport stuff. Goes to the most popular site on the web to get some counsel and immediately gets ripped as a.) all site newbies do and b.) all tri guys on that site do. Our athlete asks himself - "WTF is up with this?" and appropriately decides the site message board sucks.

I know that Lucho's history in this sport is short lived and suspected he had not heard of Mr. Gary's other accomplishments - hence the hint (in a non letsrun fashion).

My nickel ... I have gravitated away from Letsrun ... I find I can get 99 percent of the news related to running I want in a friendlier format (specifically delivered to my mailbox, the content I want) without all the asshole comments via RSS feeds.

In the interim, I kind of enjoy being able to see new folks find out about guys like Gary, Deek, etc. Hell, I am on the same learning curve about tri guys and ultra folks.

Thanks GZ, well said. For the 10 good bits of advice on LR you have to wade through a hundred troll's garbage. The front page is good for catching up on the week's news, but the message boards are a toilet. I learn far more from the blogosphere which is overall quite positive and supportive. If I had commented that I didn't know who Robert Gary was on LR... I would immediately be treated like garbage. Instead- you informed me without the rudeness. I could go on for days.. nuff said. (oh, and I would also be corrected for my poor grammar just now).

You should try to find that original thread, keep it around as motivation.

In LR's defense, if you wanted to get info on, say, training at altitude, that's probably the best starting place out there. Lots of trolls, but some of the best coaches and athletes in the world sometimes post too, even Paula Radcliffe. And of course, right now on the messageboard you can also learn about the impact on training of drinking a gallon of milk per day.

Justin- LOL, a gallon of milk. I'm too sensitive to rude people. Hannibal Lecter would eat them. I just avoid them.
