Thursday

Am) 2:00 exactly with 2153 ft of gain. The last 3 miles was breaking trail on one of my favorite jeep roads, I couldn't wait for the snow to melt (funny, GZ and I talked (e-mailed) this morning about how much we don't like this type of running). This will be a very regular route for me this summer (maybe sooner if I get a path packed out). The jeep road, which is essentially an 8 foot wide single track (technical) trail, starts/ ends about 300 ft from my driveway. If I start on the jeep road it climbs to 9200ft in 2.7 miles and takes me to the edge of Roosevelt National Forest which then accesses hundreds of miles of trail and dirt road. As the crow flies the top of this climb is 6 miles from Tolland Road, one of my favorite runs. Tons of animal tracks but nothing big. I walked in the tracks of a cougar on this 'road' last winter. If I run the backwoods enough I'm bound to run in to one eventually. I was told the other day that you don't come across a cougar... the cougar lets you see it. It's a privilege. I like that idea.

It's just a courtesy before they eat you.

That's something at least.

You might want to take a couple Testemax before running in couger country. I had 3 mountain lion sitings when I lived in Flagstaff for a total of 3 seconds. They saw me and we're gone before I knew what I saw. In the winter I'd see their tracks often and would remind me that they are here in the summer as well. I'm sure they reported a couple thousand Rick sitings on their blogs.

Cougar blogs... funny. 3 lions!? Awesome! I would imagine that there more lions at the lower elevations and close to cities (I'm guessing). There would be far more raccoons and cats and dogs. Testemax LOL.

The lions in Flagstaff stayed between 7-8,000'. They hunted mule deer; there were plenty and the lions were succesful in that hunt. I never really felt in danger because they were so successful with the abundant mule deer. Anything can happen, tea. But really it was more dangerous driving to work in the morning.

Damn... so my new 'Mule Deer' jogging outfit is a bad idea?
