Saturday Golden Gate Canyon State Park

I didn't take those pictures but that's where we ran.
1:45 through beautiful state park. I can't believe I've been up here for 10 months and am just now finding this. It's basically in my back yard! Bill Fanselow took me on a loop and I knew better than to wear my HR monitor... some things are better left unknown. I felt really very good for this and I think yesterday shook out a few cobwebs. It's always like this too after a break in training. I've been running almost entirely at MAF now for going on 13 years and it seems a strong aerobic base is never far below the surface. One intersting observation I made today- I was bundled up with layers and no skin left bare except my nose and neck and I was freezing the entire run. Bill however- started in shorts then shed his shirt half way through the run! Very different metabolisms going on here. I'm very good in the heat and Bill isn't. Bill is leaning out for his upcoming marathon and I stay the same weight no matter how much I don't eat or eat. I never bonk and I rarely get dehydrated because I don't sweat. Hopefully these are all good signs for Leadville. Good run with good company on great trails. Golden Gate might be my new playground.

Wow! Nice terrain and a beautiful place! Makes our south texas locale look mundane and boring :-) I understand about the heat thing, I totally roast in the heat and LOVE the cold. Something to do with size I guess, at 6'3" 188lbs, I simply cannot hang with my lighter/shorter running partners in summer. Once it gets cold however, the tables are turned and I get some revenge.

You really seem to have found your place in this new endeavor and I can't wait to hear about Leadville! It appears you are set to have FUN, and that leads to good finishes/maximum efforts that makes a man satisfied he gave it his all.

Another fun local run is at Centennial Cone - not all that far from GG. There's a 12-mile or so loop w/ a couple of additional side loops available to add on a few miles. And, a lot of it is out of the trees, so it might stay snow-free longer than some of GG.

Thanks Keith. You love the cold and not the heat? South Texas? :)

Awesome- thanks Jim. Today was my first run in GG. I'll certainly take your recommendation and explore Centennial Cone. There are so many miles to explore up here and I live in the middle of it all!

We like to come up with the kids and stay in the cabins there.

Wow. That's gorgeous.
I struggle in the cold and the heat. What does that mean about me?
Just kidding...
Not a good outlook if its neuroma... :( Yes, wider shoes help it. That's why I have the clogs and the UGGS too.

Mary- I would rather have a neuroma like mine than plantar. Mine is completely manageable as long as I don't wear narrow shoes.

Brandon- The only cabins we saw were historical or ancient remnants. I heard there are cabins to rent up there.

Yeah, seems dumb, I live in south (hot)Texas, and I hate running in heat. But I did not really take up (serious)running till a year ago, and I have learned that I am NOT a heat guy. I have learned to take my long runs at 4am...yesterday it was 52f for a 20 miler and I was in heaven (well almost, Co. apparently is heaven) :-)
