Saturday 5k race- 16:20.

Yesterday I jogged easy for 3 miles and lifted weights for core and legs. Legs felt quite tired.

This morning was a local 5k race with prize money... I placed 3rd with a 16:20. I hung out with Tony DeBoom afterwards who was there supporting one of the athletes he coaches, we agreed that for us "old" Ironman guys there is really only one gear (although I remember on many occasions Tony displaying something akin to a nitrous booster with a 8th gear). I felt neither good nor bad.. just flat. As soon as the two leaders separated themselves from the rest of us mortals, I settled in to the pack and relaxed... surged up the last hill and held off the 4th place guy. It was good training.

TL - nice effort today. FWIW, you humble guy you, your readers ought to know that the two guys who beat you are 2 of the less than a handful of guys who broke 4 minutes for the mile in Colorado (... yes there was a drop in that course, but these guys are no slouches) - amongst various other ridiculous accomplishments in their resumes.

Good job today! Great to meet your family.

Hey...75 smackers is certainly better than a sharp stick in the eye. Especially if the entry fee was $74 or less; in this day and age, you never know. I just hope running races haven't gone the way of triathlon or ultra-cycling events ($$$).

Nice work Lucho!

I disagree about the old triathlete "one gear" theory, though. You've just got to change gears and go FAST on those truly hard days. Rewrite the mindset and bust out the occasional 4:30 mile and a 5:15 will seem like a walk in the park. I'm having to do the same on the bike and it's just as difficult. Embrace the pain my friend; embrace it, nurture it, and keep regurgitating those solid performances. Again, solid effort mi amigo!
