Ben's birthday cake

This evening I made a cake for my son's 3 year birthday. This was my first attempt at a 3D cake. My proportions are off and carving a cake in to a car is tough!
I baked 2, 9" X 13" white cakes and froze them last night so they are easier to carve.
Fondant only comes in white so I hand mixed red food coloring in to it. It took a good 5:00 of kneading. Then rolled it into a thin sheet and laid it over the cake.

White fondant for the windshield (which I cut too small) and the mouth. The spoiler is a graham cracker covered in fondant.

Oreo cookie wheels with black frosting to make them bigger. Red fondant rims... it's all about the wheels! I painted the windows, eyes and detailed the rims with food coloring gel.

I originally was going to put Lightening McQueen's number on the roof but I went with a #3 instead.

And the almost finished cake. The lightening on the side turned out better than I thought they would. Tomorrow I'll finish the 'ground' before we head to a huge farm for Ben's party. Pony rides and a gazillion baby goats, sheep, and chickens.

Kerrie- Ya, we missed you guys!
Nice job at Phoenix! Hip injury my ass. I read that the Canadian Olympic trials standard for women is 2:31 ("B")! WTF? That's crazy.

yeah, well that's exactly why canada hasn't sent anyone to the olympics in the marathon for the last million years...you'd have to set a canadian record to even qualify. it's a real bone of contention in canadian athletics....the men's standards are just as crazy.

i just wanted to run the OQS for the american trials so i could turn it down. lol.
