Just dipping my toe in... not bad.
2 liters of Gatorade with 3 swallows every mile to 2 miles. It was so cold that my body wasn't holding water and I peed about 6 times. 1 Powergel every 6 miles. 27 degrees to start and damn... damn cold at 9000+ ft. 2 layers on legs, 3 layers up top with compression tights and full compression top and my beard, which is coming in nicely.
The true gauge for how hard a run was, is to see how you feel for the 48 hours after the run. If I feel great tomorrow, and even more importantly on Thursday, then this was pretty easy. It felt easy, but as GZ would say... whatever. It would be like running 8 miles and then saying that the marathon will be easy!

How was the final 750ish of climb? I have to think that after running for 3 hours how the final climb felt is a good measuring stick.

Josh- Not bad at all, the downhill at mile 27 sucked butt though. I see my biggest challenge will be to not run too fast. 7:30 pace is quite relaxed, but way, way too fast. My quads felt the downhills and the uphills were a relief.
Bitchin climb between 2.5 and 5 miles.
Totally know what you mean about uphills being a relief. You control that versus fighting old man gravity.
GZ- that first 10 miles was the run I wanted you to do with me as an out/back. The first/last 2 miles is brutal, we could have filled our Camelbaks with rocks for the finish.
Miles 26-29 hurt my quads!
Have you given any thought to trail shoes for your new hobby? Are you running these in the Lunars?
JP- I seriously can't see myself doing well in heavy trail shoes. Maybe there are models out there that are neutral and light? I wore a pair of Montrail something or others that I won in a race this summer and they were just awful. My motorcycle boots are lighter and more forgiving. They are just low top hiking boots in my opinion. The Lunars (good call) I wore today are completely packed out and almost smooth on the bottom. I'll most likely either get new ones or try the Lunar Glides. I wore these Lunars at the Eldora 10k I ran and never slipped once. But- I feel like I am learning a whole new sport, so we'll see. As my long runs get longer I'm sure I'll find out what needs to happen.

Have you ever heard of Run/Walk Mixing via Jeff Galloway?
Supposedly, you can run an overall faster net pace because you force yourself to use different muscles, etc. I've tried it in my ultras and it has seemed to work for me. I doubt I could run 50 miles worth of 11 1/2 minute miles, but I was indeed able to average that by running 9 minute miles with occasional walking breaks.
Anyhoo, do you have the ear of any ultra people? You seem to be able to digest a lot of different opinions/experiences and filter out what works best for you. There are probably a lot of opinions on walk mixing, training approaches, etc. etc. etc.

I have a pair of the Trainers. I just bought the Lunar Glides and want to buy 10 pairs in case Nike discontinues the model! My favorite shoe in 30 years of running. They've "beefed" up the sole for better wear (by about a 1/2 oz. per pair) and added a little bit of pad at the Achilles point. The heal seems a touch lower than the Trainer, which for trail running, I think the lower profile works. A bit wider toe box also. Good for when those dogs start to swell at mile 50!
I've been reading a ton of training journals and info, advice. Nothing jumps out at me as being rocket science. It seems the training protocol is determined by the runner's ability to absorb mileage and calories. From Ironman I have the calorie thing down like second nature. Mileage? I have an idea where I fit in to that but we'll see. I'm leaning towards Matt Carpenters 'accumulated' fatigue/ hard run ideas and his use of the HR monitor. He ran ~2:00 a day but threw in some hard workouts too. Back to back long runs... etc. I doubt that's far removed from what everyone else is doing too.
Today I walked 3 times to get my HR down at the end, but after seeing my average pace for the run which would be suicide in a 100 mile race, the walking approach seems smart- at least until I can temper my pace better. Today I saw a conundrum, running 11:00 miles was very uncomfortable and hurt. My 'natural' stride and pace was falling at ~6:45 on the downhills which felt easier, but killed me in the end. Lots to learn!
JP- Nike hit it out of the park with the Lunars (IMO). Best shoe ever for me. Thanks for the input, I'll try the Glides. I need a wide toe box too.
I've been running in NB 790's, 8 oz, and love them. They've been dicontinued and replaced by the NB 100, 7.8 oz. These shoes had 100 milers in mind I believe, since they are calleed 100's. Anton and , I think, Eric Skaggs had a say in how it was made. I think Anton actually wore a tweeked 5 oz pair of these for Leadville. I'm going to get a pair soon, I'll post some thoughts on them.

I think thats one of the many reason for walking breaks. Run a more natural pace that feels right, then take occasional walking breaks so you can turn around and run at that natural pace again. Running too slow feels unnatural/hurts me too.
Although, there are some folks like Tony K that just run 8 minute miles forever (he has run a 100 in under 13 1/2 hours)...crazy!
I'm trying out those NB 100's this week as well. Hoping they work as my Brooks Cascadias are feeling a bit too beefy...although not as bad as a pair of Montrails!
Yea, I'm pretty neutral; All I ask of a shoe is to protect the bottom of my foot and last a reasonable amout of time.
