Thursday 2 miles

Eased in to a light jog to test out the equipment. I can tell any future vasectomites out there that (in my case at least) stubble is more painful than the surgery. All systems go it would seem. The plan now is two things: Mileage and MAF. With just 4 weeks to train for my first ultra I'll be doing what I feel is the most bang for my training buck and it's what I've always enjoyed the most in regards to training. Use the volume as the stimulation for fitness, not intensity. If a run is too easy then I'll go longer. I'm looking forward to this. Very much.
I'll do some easy volume next week then I may be doing a run with a bunch of guys that could be brutally fast and long... but I've been instructed not to talk about it. The HR protocol might/ will get ditched but the run will be a blast and that will be my first rule of running from here on. If it sounds fun then the schedule becomes liquid. The run might involve beer so that is appropriate. Believe it or not but I've never had this attitude. It was always put your nose to the grind stone and do the work that is planned, the schedule is written in stone.

I was reading the "dizzy fifties" endty form from the link and it looks awesome! I especially love that the aid stations will have food provided from the race director, even if they have to cook it themselves!

Glad to hear it's going well. I'll practice running with stubble to train for the "V."

Dave- It's a super low key race, which I'm looking forward to. It will be more of a fun group run than anything. It will be perfect for my first race.

Rick- Seriously. It's a constant discomfort. If I had known any better I would have had them do just the part that they needed shaved. I went silly with the razor. They had razors on the cart so they were prepared to do it themselves. But it will probably be a nurse, so if you're OK with having a person that you don't know shave your junk then wait. Alright, that's too much information now...

I have to agree with the stubble comment. I am three weeks out from the vas and my scrotum just stopped itching.

Have not tried END shoes, but I believe they went out of business.

i think that all the great training advice you provide for free this may one of the most profound things i have read on your blog:

"the run will be a blast and that will be my first rule of running from here on. If it sounds fun then the schedule becomes liquid."

i like it. it's kind of where i have been in the past 6 months and really enjoying myself... and getting fast! i don't think getting fast/fit and having fun have to be mutually exclusive.

yeah i am sure we could all be a little stronger/faster/fitter if we followed a very rigid, detailed plan and didn't consider "fun" part of the plan... but what's the point. at the end of the day if you are not having fun it's a waster of time. for 99% of us sport is a hobby. fun should rule.

can't to hear about the brutally fast fun run... especially the beer part.

Thanks Jameson- I've definitely evolved since I moved up to the mountains. I thoughts on running are completely different from just a year ago. It may come off as wishy washy at times but I just haven't found my groove yet... hopefully, and it sounds like you would agree, I am on the right trail.

Been reading your blog for a while and seen the ups and downs of your training and races. Even though I don't know you, I feel like I do. Hell I know more about what you do than some of the folks I am actually friends with. The magic of the internet and blogs! The point is I get excited when you start training for something big (or other distance or fast people's blog that I read). I feel bad whenever you have not performed up to your expectations. I look forward to seeing what you can really do. Anyway just wanted to convey a few words of encouragement and that I am looking forward to see the results of your new distance project.

Well said - "If a run is too easy then I'll go longer."
I've made this my "blog description" if you don't mind.

Thank you Kevin. I appreciate the good words! I'll keep writing.

Rick- Have at it.
