Tuesday 14 miles.

Weird 24 hours for me. I got nailed by a hornet last night right on my knee cap. My knee joint swelled last night and I woke up at 11:00, 11:55 (took ibuprofen), 1:30, and finally got out of bed at 3:55. My knee is swollen still and very stiff... all the skin around my knee is numb. I tried to run my tempo this morning and was limping and my HR would not elevate. I ran 6 miles in 40:00 with my max HR at 126.
Tried to run again right before my wife went to work at noon- energy was great, legs felt awesome, but I couldn't bend my knee very well. I just ran a steady 8 miles.. during which I got a bloody nose. Ben is sick right now and I thought my nose was running. I kept blowing it about every 2:00 when I looked down at my shoulder and it was covered in blood. My hand was covered too. Limping along the trail covered in blood.. I still had a good run though. I'll move the threshold miles to Saturday and my long run to Sunday. Track reps tomorrow.

And welcome Beth and fatdad to my athlete roster. Beth is running the Las Vegas marathon and fatdad (who really isn't fat!) is running Seattle then Boston.

This my marathon shoe.. amazing! Nike Lunar Trainer.. Dathan Ritzenhein wore these at Beijing. Jeff pointed these out to me.

Glad it was only swelling you got.. some people react differently. My dad and brother are both allergic and have had to be rushed to hospitals after they've been stung. I've been stung plenty of times but all I get is basically what you got. Swelling and numbness.. wierd about the nosebleed however?!? The swelling and numbness should go away fairly quickly.. I was competing at a sprint one time and had one fly into my chest on the bike and sting me on the left pec.. talk about a third boob!!

Sweet shoes..

Ward- I'm pretty wasp and bee proof. It was just in a weird place. I've been stung on the lip during a bike ride.. funny to try and drink from a bottle. Swollen lips and a third boob. ha.
Not sure about the nose bleed either.

I'm interested to see how those lunar lite trainers work out for you. I'm running in the Lunar lite racers now, and I'm planning on using them at Kona for the marathon. So far I'm loving them!! 5.5 ounces of sweetness.

Paul- I'm not sure how the racers will work for me. I've kept my foot healthy (knock on wood) by avoiding my super light racers. The trainer weighs 8.8 ounces so I'm thinking they'll be perfect. Too light and your feet end up getting so beat up that you change your foot plant, then you change your bio mechanics which affect all the muscles in your legs. What I'll do is run all of my long runs in them, then buy a new pair for Vegas.

I got stung halfway through a monster workout this Saturday on the bike right above my lip. OUCH! I feel your pain man. At least with the blood on your shirt you probably looked like a warrior! Hahaha, or some kind of psycho, running away from your last murder! Awesome that it was still a good run though!

Hi Tim, How does one get added to your athlete roster? Do you provide a training plan and what is the cost?
Thanks, Brad

Brad- Thank you for the interest! Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately)I am at my coaching limit right now. Beth and fatdad actually came to me a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to start coaching for Alan in January- but we already have 15 athletes ready to start so I need to make sure I have time for that. As with Ward (above) I will say that if an opening comes up I will let you know! In the mean time feel free to ask any questions that you have- I think starting new discussions is a great way for us all to learn.
Thanks again!

For future attacks of the bee kind. Allergic or not the sying will produce a rxn. To minimize this take 25-50 mg of benadryl. I always take 50 mg = 2 otc caps, but it does not make me drowsy. If it makes you tired and you have other things to do that day take at least 25 mg. Better if you take it sooner rather than later.Don't bother with the benadryl creams though they will not help. And benadryl is better than the newer non-sedating claritin for this. But if that is all you have then take 10 mg of that.

Thanks Brfoot! I'll try that in the future.

New shoes? I though you only ran in shoes that fished out of the trash can or second hand shoes that were rejected by the Ethopian Junior Running Team! Good luck with the new shoes!

Ha! Once in a while I'll be smart. If I could justify spending $100 a month on shoes I certainly would.

That day-glo green sole on those new kicks takes me back to most races in the late 80's, early 90's!
Trippy looking shoe! Have you got a run in them yet?

Lucho said...

JP- I just ordered them yesterday. I did try on Jeff's this morning and they far exceed my expectations at first glance! I've been waiting for this shoe for 10 years! With the new NASA foam in the sole it is finally here. An 8.8 oz. cushioned shoe. The racers use the same sole just a different, more minimalistic, upper- so I suspect that if I like this shoe I'll be buying a another pair of the racers for the marathon.

Hello Tim!
I've got two questions regarding these shoes. 1. How many miles are they good for? Is there a limit when one should stop using them?
2. Would you recommend these shoes to everyone or just to very experienced runners?
Thanks
Torsten

Torsten- Nike calls these 'high mileage' trainers. The soles look like they would be very soft and delicate but after ~50 miles they look new. Depending on how much a person weighs I would assume these would last ~400 miles or so.
They don't have any motion control attributes which may or may not be a good thing for you. Nike used ideas from their 'Free' shoe to build the 'Lunar' so you'll find the shoe to be super soft with a flexible sole. I think anyone could wear these as long as they didn't need a ton of motion control. Just break them in gradually and rotate them with your normal shoes.
