6th place. 19:19. I felt amazing up to 94 miles and then the wheels came off BIG time. I was in 5th at mile 98 and got passed right before the finish. Zero left in my quads and hypothermic.
More later.
My pacer Tim Long has a little bit on his blog. Tim was incredible all day and we laughed a lot and really worked very well together. Tons of fun having Tim there for the last 50 miles.
WOOOOOO!!! Oh my god, so awesome. I was trying to follow on twitter, which left me with a migraine until I saw that you were in 8th at the 13 hour point and moving up. Alright, I'm probably a little too happy right now, but I just wanted to say that all my convictions about your awesomeness were confirmed.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear some details, especially the mental journey! I imagine it involves new combinations of curse words that will be good for me to know, for use in my blog and during law school exams :)
Congratulations! Tim's description of your race sounds exactly like your previous description of your strategy. Very nice work and very inspiring. Can't wait to hear some Lucho style details.
ReplyDelete-Kevin S.
Congratulations! Was following twitter all day and saw you in 8th at 76 miles and knew that yesterday was going to be a special day for you. 6th in your first Leadville 100. Nice!
ReplyDeleteGreat Job!! As a father of twin girls (9), I totally appreciate your jog stroller runs (Texas heat, not altitude for me). Amazing effort yesterday!
ReplyDeleteJames
Way to take the pressure off yourself and enjoy it( if that's possible in a 100 mile race). Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteWow Lucho!!!!! That's incredible!!!! I have a feeling you're going to win this race one day. How does your 6th here compare to your 13th in Kona?
ReplyDeleteI am super proud of you! Top ten? CHECK! It appears you had fun, and it shows (well, those last few miles...gnarly I bet).
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!!!! You are a tough bastard for sure. :-)
Congratulations!!! Sounds like an epic day and well inside Your goals of top 10 and sub 19.20!!! Happy recovery, Claus
ReplyDeleteTim, you rock! So glad you nailed this thing. Looking forwared to reading your full report. Fantastic effort and result.
ReplyDeleteCarter
Congratulations Tim. Very very inspiring...
ReplyDeleteGood job, Lucho.
ReplyDeleteYEAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteF YEA!
Legend
ReplyDeleteCongrats! That's an awesome time for your first 100 miler. I can't wait to read the details.
ReplyDeleteAwesome work Tim(s). Congrats on a very impressive 100 debut.
ReplyDeleteNice work!
ReplyDeleteIt was a long road to this result; I'm delighted for you! Back next year to jump up a few places?
ReplyDeleteSixth place is awesome - nothing to be embarrassed about there! Great job, especially for your first attempt - Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic! Really happy for you man! I think this is just the beginning of your illustrious ultra career. First time to get under 20 at Pbville is amazing! Rest up and have a few beers, like me! I'm drinking a Rogue and a Laurelwood IPAs in the Portland airport. Man! Really happy for you!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Tim!!! I'm excited for you. That's just AMAZING! Especially since your long run was 50 miles!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! excellent racing/mental toughness
ReplyDeleteGreat job Coach! The twitter feeds were terrible... Glad to see you rocked this!
ReplyDeleteThank you all very much! I appreciate the good words.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done. Smart training, pure guts, well deserved results.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Tony and Hal did not have such a good day: both DNFed... I'll assume hammy for Tony and ankle for Hal, probably.
How did the knee hold out for you Lucho?
John- Hal went off course in the same place that I did (and many others). I was able to cut my losses to 15:00 but Hal (I heard) lost 45:00. When I saw him heading in to Winfield he looked like he hadn't run at all but was not in to the race either.
ReplyDeleteThe word on the trail was that Tony had some pretty severe hypothermia. Tim and I were dropping off powerline on our way in and had search and rescue crews ask us if we had seen him.
Hell yeah!!! Congrats, Tim. Well done.
ReplyDeleteGreat job. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteLove the header photo.
ReplyDeleteBalls.
By the way, one word of blogging etiquette - the length of a race report should be commensurate with the length of a race. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff, Lucho.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a huge breakthrough.
And I was almost right on my top 5 call! but sounds like the 100 really dug-in; ouch.
Way to go, dude.
Bigger. Go, bigger.
priceless buckle, tim! western states next?

Un-freakin'-real! Great job! Suuuper inspiring! Thanks for taking us on the journey!:)
ReplyDeleteamazing. I did my own run on a 100 mile course this weekend on a much harder profile and guess what? 19:18...
ReplyDeleteLOL. goddamn dude. tearing up writing this. so proud of you and happy for you. can't wait to hear more.
Thanks guys!
ReplyDeleteHa! Jeff... what was your HR though?
Donna- Not sure if the 100 mile run thing is in my system. One time may have been enough (which is of course what everyone says). The Leadville 100 mountain bike though... very likely.
Pikes Peak next year!!
ReplyDeleteWard- Exactly...
ReplyDeleteTim,
ReplyDeleteGreat job and solid performance! It was amazing to see how well you were moving up the Powerlines. I tried to motivate Harry to give chase but there was no way to match the speed which you were moving. Excellent job on an otherwise pretty epic day.
Todd
Todd- Thanks man. We had a nice back and forth that last ~30 miles! And looking at the results it was close at the finish. I have a video of me finishing and I can see your headlamps in the distance behind me. That was definitely fun, thanks!
ReplyDeletecongrats thats a SOLID race, bummer about loosing a spot that late into a long race like that.
ReplyDeleteMatt- Thank you! I lost that place because of poor choices. It's only a bummer if I don't learn from my mistake.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a great race and thank your for sharing your experience. Would love to hear more about "when the wheels came apart". How did you get through it physically and mentally? If you were to do Leadville again, what changes would you make to ensure a less painful finish?
ReplyDeleteNergock- Ya, I apologize for such a lame race report. I really do only remember glimpses of the race. I like these questions a lot though and I promise I'll make a blog post about these exact questions his week!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the good word.
